Melvin Springer Memorial Scholarship
The Melvin Springer Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Melvin Springer, who passed away in 2014. Melvin was a long-time Olympia bus driver and dedicated supporter of girls’ softball. Melvin cared deeply about the girls on the team, cooking them pork chops before big games, asking them about their lives and dreams, cheering them on at most all their games, calling them ‘his girls’. Melvin cared about winning games, but more importantly he cared about the players’ feelings and the content of their characters. This scholarship of $500 will be awarded annually to a graduating senior who:
plays softball at Olympia High School.
maintains at least a 3.0 GPA.
plans to pursue a college education or technical training.
exhibits high moral character and sportsmanship.
cares deeply about others.
Criteria
Any student applying for the scholarship will complete the application by April 20.
The application will include a letter of recommendation from a teacher, the completed application form, and a transcript from OHS.
The winner will be selected by a committee consisting of the OHMS Activities Director, one coach who is a district employee (doesn’t have to be the softball coach), and one OHS teacher.
The scholarship will be presented at OHS Awards Night.
This scholarship is maintained by Melvin’s wife and daughters: Patty Springer, Rebecca Meissner, Cindy Lawhorne, and Sally Griffith.
